The Saddest Number One Songs Of All Time

Are these really the SADDEST number songs EVER?

August 27, 2018

Spotify has an algorithm that supposedly quantifies the amount of sadness in a song.  And a "data journalist" for the BBC decided to use it to find the saddest songs to hit #1 in the history of the Billboard charts.

That's 60 years of music.  The Hot 100 started in July of 1958.  Here are the five "saddest" #1 songs...

1.  "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", Roberta Flack  (1972)

2.  "Three Times a Lady", The Commodores  (1978)

3.  "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", Elvis Presley  (1960)

4.  "Mr. Custer", Larry Verne  (1960)

5.  "Still", The Commodores  (1979)

Unfortunately, Spotify's algorithm isn't perfect.  Only two of these songs are actually sad, lyrically speaking, anyway:  "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "Still".
