Voice of Caring 2017: H.E.R.O.E.S. Care

November 1, 2017
Since 2003, H.E.R.O.E.S. Care, a national not-for-profit based in St. Louis, has been serving military families before, during, and after deployment. You may have never heard of them. That’s OK. Quietly and without fanfare This dedicated group has provided critical financial and material aid to more than 200,000 military members and their families. Just one example of our important work: Through their food pantries strategically located throughout Missouri, they provided 160 tons of food for nearly 5000 military families and Veterans in 2016 alone. And the help they provide doesn’t stop with meeting material and emergency financial needs. Through the work of thousands of highly trained, uniquely qualified volunteer caregivers, they help families cope with the stressors of deployment and separation. They support wives and mothers caring for loved ones struggling with both the seen and unseen wounds of war. And these caregivers support military and veteran families for a minimum of three years or as long as they are needed. And the need is great. Did you know there are roughly 50,000 service members who call the average state home? Of these, roughly 5,000 are deployed at any given time. At least 500 will require the comprehensive support H.E.R.O.E.S. Care provides. And the most heartbreaking number of all: More than 50 of these combat Veterans will attempt to take their own lives. H.E.R.O.E.S. Care reaches out to the 50,000 in order to support the 5,000 and to sustain the 500 to help prevent the 50. And by the way, H.E.R.O.E.S. stands for Homefront Enabling Relationships, Opportunities, and Empowerment through Support. This really says it all. Their comprehensive system of community based care is saving lives, saving marriages, saving families. Y98 and Busey Bank proudly partner to present the Voices of Caring Organizations.
