Fiona Apple revealed her holiday-themed distaste for President-elect Donald Trump in early December with her song, “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” The track borrows the melody of “Christmas Song” or the more popular title, “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” while inserting how Apple sees Trump’s America.
On Sunday evening (December 18), Apple played her first solo show in more than three years at L.A.’s Fonda Theatre. A benefit to raise money for the legal fees protesters now face after fighting to reroute the Dakota Access Pipeline, Apple was one of several performers including TV On The Radio, Sky Ferreira, Devendra Banhart, Moses Sumney, Kimya Dawson, among others.
During her set, Apple sang her anti-Trump parody as well as a cover of The Brains’ “Money Changes Everything,” made famous by Cyndi Lauper in 1984, and her hit, “Sleep To Dream.” Watch Apple’s spirited performance of “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire” below.
