Anyone who grew up in the ’90s remembers that infamous Saved by the Bell episode where Jessie Spano freaks out on caffeine pills. But in a new tell-all book, executive producer Peter Engel writes she was originally supposed to be high on speed. “I insisted that we needed to start dealing with more important issues than we had in the past, and that speed was a vehicle not only for exploring drug use, but also the pressure that kids put on themselves to achieve,” writes Engel in I Was Saved by the Bell: Stories of Life, Love, and Dreams That Do Come True. “But Standards and Practices wasn’t budging.” He adds he didn’t want to write about caffeine pills instead, but “we had to start somewhere.”
